The Type 001 aircraft carrier Liaoning is China's first operational aircraft carrier. Originally an unfinished Soviet-era vessel named Varyag, it was purchased by China from Ukraine in the late 1990s. After overcoming numerous challenges, it was transported to China in 2002 and underwent a decade of extensive modifications before being officially commissioned in 2012 with the pennant number '16.' As a pioneer in the development of the Chinese Navy, Liaoning has continuously enhanced its combat capabilities through ongoing modernization. In 2024, a systematic overhaul was conducted, which included a comprehensive inspection and maintenance of the ship's structure as well as upgrades to its radar and electronic warfare systems. These upgrades significantly improved its capabilities in information gathering, electronic countermeasures, and firepower, providing stronger support for future naval combat scenarios.
In October 2024, the Liaoning carrier task group conducted distant-sea combat training, during which Liaoning and Shandong carrier groups carried out their first dual-carrier formation exercise. This joint operation not only demonstrated the growing maturity of China's carrier strike groups but also provided valuable practical experience for future multi-carrier coordinated operations.
